Growing up, Campbell developed a deep love for football, which would eventually lead him to Bethel College in Michigan, where he began his coaching career as a graduate assistant in 1994. A Rise Through the Ranks: Campbell as an NFL Assistant

With a prominent resume boasting over 20 years of experience and 12 years as an assistant coach in the NFL, Campbell's strong suit made him a prime candidate for his first head coaching position: an opportunity to lead as the head coach of the Detroit Lions.
